`Moin` is a word used only in the northern part of Germany for saying `hello'. Actually it means `nice' and is related to the dutch word for `nice'. In other parts of Germany `moin' is misused for `guten morgen' meaning `good morning'. There I get funny faces when saying `moin' in the afternoon. In Oldenburg, my home town, it is rather common to say `moin moin' just to anybody at any time.
